Join a conversation about “The Nonprofit Sector: A Research Handbook” with Woody Powell (Stanford University), Patricia Bromley (Stanford University), Helmut K. Anheier and Johanna Mair (Hertie School, Stanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society).
This event is hosted in cooperation with CIVICA.

In this salon-style conversation, we will focus on two chapters from the handbook, which emphasise international and comparative aspects of the non-profit sector. The conversation will discuss the ways in which non-profits and civil society have changed, the growing role of non-profits in public policy, the blurring boundaries between the for-profit, public and nonprofit sectors, and more.

The Handbook fills a unique space in non-profit literature. The third – and latest –  volume is the largest yet, covering a broader range of topics in a more expansive way and with a more global perspective. Containing 29 new chapters, this volume is an empirical and theoretical assessment of the state of the field, featuring the work of a new generation of researchers. The second edition, published in 2006, explored the ways in which non-profit organisations attempted to influence society, interact with governments and operate in an increasingly business-like manner. The first edition, published in 1987, focused efforts on a newly emerging space referred to as the independent sector and the professionalisation of non-profit organisations.
